Born in San Francisco, November 18, 1852; member of the first freshman class of the University of California, graduating in 1873 with the university gold medal for highest scholarship; lawyer, admitted to the California bar on April 11, 1876; represented Alameda County in the California State Assembly, 1907-1911; Mayor of Alameda, 1913-1915, elected to a second term in 1919; Alameda City Council member, 1917-1919; received honorary degree from the University of California on Charter Day, 1931.
